“I’m so glad that when I do something wrong you don’t tell me off for being stupid like at school and you explain to me how I can improve and make it better. Thanks, your great!!”

Inductions

All researchers are required to attend an induction session when they join Notschool.net. At the session they learn the fundamentals of engaging in the community; assembling their computer, logging on to the virtual environment and how to use e-mail. This ensures they have the basic skills necessary to take part.

Every aspect of the session has been considered in detail and a successful, replicable formula has been employed for several years. The ideal is to have six researchers of equal gender balance.

The induction day begins at around 10:30am to enable families to complete their morning tasks without undue time and travel pressures. This ensures a near 100% attendance at the first day of Notschool. The induction day normally lasts around four hours.

Great care is taken with the selection of venue - many researchers cannot cope with an environment resembling school. Conversely, they enjoy inductions held at Universities where young adults can be observed to be treated differently than at school; instilling a feeling of maturity and calm. Usually, the less formal the venue the more more successful it is.

An air of informality is maintained during the day. Reseachers are encouraged to play music and move around freely. Food, popular with teenagers is provided. Researchers are free to leave the room if they so wish; there are none of the normal restrictions imposed at school. Experienced researchers are often on hand at inductions to provide support to the local teams, to act as role models and to offer opportunities for social gains and raised self esteem; “if they can do it, so can I”.

When researchers arrive all their equipment is new and still boxed up. They are expected to assemble the equipment themselves and without exception they all achieve this with confidence and dexterity. This is considered to be the start of empowering them as learners and rebuilding self esteem.

At the end of the induction, researchers are all trusted to take their equipment home and reassemble it. Roll up, Roll up! The Notschool.net induction is the first important step to empowering learners and rebuilding their self esteem.
